Do any of you guys use Dunlop Tyres? On my Galaxy, I can only get around 11,000 miles out of a pair on the front. Maybe a little more...I know they are soft but that seems v low to me.

I went to Dunlops from Bridgestone, as I found the Bridgestone very noisy. Whats the latest thinking on tyres...used to be Continentals that were recommended in these forums?

cheers all

My Michelin Pilots seem to be holding up well. 16,000 so far and probably still enought left for another 5K. Probably not the best for grip though!

Were these the SP2020's they have a reputation for not lasting very well, basically crap soft rubber.

A decent pair of budget tyres should last at least 30,000 miles, I have gotten 50,000 out of several different types.

Have 2020's on mine and like you cannot get many miles at all , approx 12k on last set and they ain't cheap . Does anyone use budgets if so which ones as i am looking to replace all four within the month ?

there is lots of info on different tyres in this place, i had FULLRUN ones on my gal, directional budget tyres and they were pretty good, dunlops are useless on the front of a gal ( my opinion )

As mo4 says, this has been discussed many times on here, and it's worth having a search and reading some of the threads - there's some good info.

I got about 15,000 miles out of the Dunlops, but it was the terrible road noise that really put me off them. The Fortunas I've still got on the front have done about 17,000 miles now, and still have a little life left in them. Even now they're quieter than the Dunlops ever were - better tyres than the Dunlops IMHO, and half the price. Unfortunately, Mytyres doesn't have them in stock at the moment, so I was considering Kumho Ecsta next, but I prefer symmetric or asymmentic tyres rather than directional. Cheaper, but also directional, are Sumo Firenza at

Logic would suggest that "directional" tyres have some large advantage over non-directional otherwise why bother making them ?

Directional tyres are undoubtedly the best tyres in terms of outright grip, however they have one distinct disadvantage - the directional tread means you're limited when swapping them around the car, and obviously they're no good on the spare.

I understand blocky symmetrical tyres are supposed to grip better laterally, giving slightly better steering response, and asymmetric tyres are a useful compromise between the two.

Surely the only swap you would do would be front to back same side ( wouldn't expect any difference in wear between left and right ).

Good point about the spare...although they are going out of fashion !

I find the nearside tyres always wear slightly more - its all these roundabouts!

I do get your point though, I was thinking more if you had a beyond repair puncture/punctures and wanted to shift wheels around when fitting a new tyre/tyres.

Thanks for the replies all...I foudn the Dunlops a lot quieter than the Bridgestone, which just seemed to go on forever (I think my Bridgestone rears lasted 35,000 miles or maybe a touch more).

Going through the threads, Continental Eco used to be recommended. I use a place down south called Micheldever Tyres, I'll give them a call and see what they have in stock

cheers

Kev, when you swap four tyres from front to back they have to go diagonally, o/s front to n/s rear and n/s front to o/s rear i have sen this in a book at a tyre fitters although some years ago, i think this is because your n/s tyres will wear more due to the camber of the road.

Good point I wondered who would notice that !

Plus your nearside sidewalls are more likely to get scuffed....at least with my parking.

Actually, the advice from carbibles is a bit more complex than that. Diagonal swapping is for 4WD vehicles only.

For FWD with symmetric and asymmetric tyres the front tyres move to the rear on the same side, the rear tyres move to the front opposite sides.

For directional tyres, it's just a front to back swap.

(For info, RWD cars with symmetric and asymmetric tyres the front tyres move to the rear opposite sides and the rear tyres move to the front on the same side).

I have P7's on my new car (not the Galaxy). They are good and grippy, but can be noisy on some road surfaces - not the quietest tyre I've ever driven on.

Thought I would throw in my two peneth. I currently have michlins on mine I get about 26k from the front and have done about 52k on the back ( still originals). I was thinking of going to something else but I may stick with them now as some of the mileages reported here are extremely low.
